AgLaw Webinar: Restoring agri-food ecosystems in the EU - The Nature Restoration Law promises, pitfalls, and pathways towards sustainable food systems | 23 January 2026
How can the EU Nature Restoration Law reshape the governance of agri-food systems and contribute to Europe’s ecological transition?
The upcoming SUSTAIN Center of Excellence webinar, hosted by the AgLaw Research Group of Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies, will bring together speakers from international organizations, EU institutions, and academia to discuss the role of ecological restoration in the transition towards sustainable agri-food systems, with a specific focus on the EU Nature Restoration Law (NRL). The first session will address the broader policy and legal context of nature restoration, reflecting on the importance of ecosystem restoration and conservation in the agri-food ecosystems from the international level to the regional level.
The second session will move from the general framework to the implementation dynamics of the regulation of the restoration of nature and sectoral implications. It will explore how the NRL navigated a highly contested political process marked by misinformation, the relevance of peatland restoration as a climate and biodiversity priority, and the growing importance of pollinator protection at the intersection of biodiversity conservation, food security and agri-food system sustainability. Particular attention will also be devoted to the relationship between the Common Agricultural Policy and the Nature Restoration Law, highlighting both emerging synergies and persistent structural asymmetries. We look forward to a stimulating discussion and hope many of you will be able to join us.
